Campcraft... The term appears in mid-1800s literature as the practical art and skill of living outdoors. It emerged alongside the development of modern recreational camping, blending frontier survival knowledge with leisure.
The word struck a chord with me. It still has relevance today, and I will make a point of using it.
We've become very good at solving problems by adding equipment. In that sense, campcraft is becoming a lost art. We're slowly replacing campcraft with equipment.
If you damage your stove jack because your chimney gets red hot all the way up, the campcraft solution is learning to control the stove, not adding Kevlar wrapping to the flue. The wrapping may protect the stove jack, but it doesn't correct the dangerous situation.
Campcraft is an old word, but perhaps it's also a response to a very modern problem. Gear should solve tasks, not work around problems. Skills solve problems.
Campcraft begins when you understand why your gear works, how to use it properly, and why it deserves a place in your camp.
